Greg Knutson was born at Baudette in Minnesota’s 9th Congressional District in 1951 where he lived until the family moved to the Evergreen Trailer Court and then to Hoyt Lakes where Greg was one of two to go from kindergarten to High School Senior in the new Aurora-Hoyt Lakes school district.
After graduation Greg worked at Erie Mining Company summers to pay for college (including working part-time from the fall of 1969 to the spring of 1970). Greg graduated from Mesabi State Junior College (now Mesabi Range Community and Technical College) in 1971 and from UMD in 2002 with a History major and a Political Science minor. On September 11, 1973 (Remember the date) Greg started working permanently at Erie Mining Company where he retired in July of 2002. Greg is active in his church, Senate District 5 Republican Party and other organizations.
While working at Erie/LTV Greg was, at times, a grievance man and on the Worker’s Compensation Committee. At Erie/LTV Greg worked in the Tailings Basin as a Booster Pumpman, Basin Pumpman and Maintenance Technician.
Greg was a member of the DFL party until the party left him in 1998 when Gay Marriage was first presented to the state convention. He stayed on until 2000 when he joined the Republican Party of Minnesota where he quickly rose in rank.
